Our 10 Most Anticipated Cannes Movies (Based Solely on Their Trailers)

The Cannes Film Festival kicks off in France this week, bringing joy to cinema buffs eager to hear about the latest personal projects from their favorite auteurs. But it's also an opportunity to sample the movies that will be coming soon to America, either in theaters or via various Video On Demand platforms. Here are the ones that we're anticipating the most.

10. Only God Forgives Ryan Gosling. Nicolas Winding Refn, reteaming for the first time since Drive. Need we say more?
9. The Bling Ring Sofia Coppola directing a promising young cast, led by Emma Watson, in a true-life tale of a gang that preys on celebrities? Yes, please.

8. As I Lay Dying James Franco is nothing if not ambitious. For his directorial debut, he's adapted a novel by literary great William Faulkner; Franco also stars, along with Tim Blake Nelson and frequent comedy running buddy Danny McBride. Has Franco finally jumped the shark? The trailer paints a bleak but intriguing picture; it's awaiting a U.S. deal.

7. Miele Advance reviews have been positive for the directorial debut of actress Valeria Golino (Rain Man), who tells the story of a beautiful young woman (Jasmine Trinca) who, as an activist for euthanasia, helps terminally ill people end their lives. The hot-button issue, combined with a European view of sexuality, should help this drama stand out. (Note: NSFW trailer.)

6. Sophie Prefers to Run The trailer is bouncy and charming, filled with the appealing sight of young, physically fit women running. But beyond that, it's downright refreshing to see a movie centered on a strong teen heroine who is not involved with vampires or werewolves. Writer/director Chloe Robichaud is just 25 years of age, another good talking point.

5. Only Lovers Left Alive Whenever he touches on traditional genre themes, independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch gives them his own dinstinctive spin, and that appears to be the case with his latest, which follows two vampires and their centures-long affair. Tom Hiddleston, Tilda Swinton, Mia Wasikowski and Anton Yelchin star.

4. The Past His Academy Award-nominated drama A Separation was brilliant and tense; now Iranian filmmaker Asghar Farhadi tackles the sensitive issue of divorce. Berenice Bejo (The Artist) stars.

3. Fruitvale Station Winner of both the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize, Fruitvale Station makes a stop in Cannes before opening in the U.S. on July 12. Based on a true story, it follows a family man (Michael B. Jordan) whose innocent ride on a subway turns into a violent, far-ranging tragedy. Octavia Spencer, Melonie Diaz and Kevin Durand also star.

2. On the Job Snap, crackle, BOOM! goes the trailer for Erik Matti's crime thriller from the Philippines. It's inspired by a true story about government officials working with gangsters to release prisoners on day passes so they could carry out assassinations.

Jodorowsky's Dune We all know that David Lynch made a visually splendid, if narratively confusing, version of Frank Herbert's classic science fiction novel, but before Lynch ended up with the project, it was in the hands of Alejandro Jorowsky, who'd made the surreal, brain-tripping El Topo and The Holy Mountain. What might that have looked like? This documentary takes a look.What are the Cannes movies you're most looking forward to reading about this year?
